Can a smartphone meditation app help employees feel calmer and more supported at work? A randomized controlled trial by Sophie Bostock, Alexandra D. Crosswell, and colleagues from University College London and the University of California, San Francisco involving 238 employees explored how short mindfulness sessions influenced psychological well-being, job strain, and positive emotions over eight weeks.

Mindfulness at Work: Can 10 Minutes of Daily Meditation Improve Stress and Well-Being? Workplace stress is a common challenge, but could a few minutes of mindfulness meditation help employees respond differently to daily pressures? A randomized controlled trial by Sophie Bostock and colleagues, published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, investigated whether smartphone-guided mindfulness meditation could improve employee well-being and reduce job strain. What Did the Researchers Study? The study enrolled 238 employees from two large UK companies. Participants were randomly assigned to either a mindfulness meditation app (Headspace) or a wait-list control group. The intervention offered 45 guided meditation sessions lasting 10–20 minutes, focusing on present-moment awareness, attention to breathing, and observing thoughts without judgment. What Were the Key Findings? After eight weeks, employees assigned to mindfulness meditation reported: • Improved psychological well-being and positive emotions. • Reduced job strain and psychological distress. • Greater perceived control over their work. • Improved perceptions of workplace social support. Interestingly, participants completed an average of approximately 17 meditation sessions over eight weeks, considerably fewer than the prescribed daily sessions. Those who completed more than 10 sessions showed greater improvements in several psychological outcomes than those completing fewer than 10 sessions. Did the Benefits Last? Improvements in overall well-being and job strain remained evident at the 16-week follow-up, although a controlled comparison was no longer possible. The Takeaway This research suggests that brief, accessible, app-guided mindfulness meditation may support employee well-being without requiring lengthy daily sessions. However, mindfulness should complement, rather than replace, organizational efforts to reduce workplace stress.
